3 ways to decorate with black

When the pandemic hit in 2020, everyone seemed to want ALL WHITE everything. It was a color that screamed fresh and new. People needed that in their life at the time. Open and airy white rooms were all the rage. I love a nice creamy white room, but when you paint a room all white you MUST have layered decor to make the room feel complete.

Today, something has shifted in the design world and now everyone wants BLACK. Black is a trending color right now. Everyone seems to be painting their exterior, front doors, shutters, and even walls inside their homes…black.

Is black a timeless color? Sure. It can be. When used correctly. Otherwise it’s trendy and will feel OUT quicker than it became IN.

ADD CONTRAST TO THOSE WALLS

Rooms that are painted black MUST have contrast. White/lighter items, texture in the room. Take a look at this image below. This room is black, but because it has many element of interior design done correctly - it works. And it’s stunning.

The textures. The lines. The shapes. The lighting. The pattern. The space.

Another tip is to add a pop COLOR to a room with black walls. Painting your room black isn’t a fix-everything move. It requires the additional details (similar to an all white room) that you don’t want to forget!

LIGHTING, LIGHTING, LIGHTING

I love lamp light and very rarely turn on our overhead lights. That’s personal preference. But, in an all black room, the overhead lighting can make the space feel harsh. If you decide to paint your room all black - lamps are KEY. You want to stick with the moody lighting since it plays nicely with the black paint color.

A TIMELESS WAY TO USE BLACK

I love using black in my home. I actually recommend a touch of black to a lot of my clients in their spaces. The key to using it is to make sure it’s an ACCENT. Take my office for example.

I’ve added black in my office by painting the hutch/cabinet black (left side of image), and having black featured in my rug/pillows (very subtly) and also my curtains.

Here’s another example of using black as a TIMELESS element in your home.

Joanna Gaines

This flooring will always be timeless. It’s bold enough to be fun and playful, but will also always be in style. In this photo you’ll see black added in a few other places to tie things together..but not overdone.

So what’s the takeaway? Black is timeless when used as an accent. But, if it’s your thing and you want to make an entire room black - be sure you finish it off with the correct design elements!
